redshift

Redshift happens when light emitted by an object, such as a star of galaxy, shifts to a lower frequency, red being the lowest frequency of light in the visible spectrum. This is relative to the direction of the object, when the object is moving away from the viewer redshift happens. The converse is blueshift. This happens when the object is moving towards the viewer. With blueshift the wave frequency increases. Basically, redshift/blueshift is the visible Doppler effect.
