beta movement
Max Wertheimer presented the concept of beta movement in 1912. Beta is the display of two or more still images which the brain then interprets as motion. The experiment he used to prove this was by showing two stills image in rapid succession. The first had a circle on the left side of the frame; the second had a circle on the right hand side of the frame. When asked what they had seen, the audience said they say a circle move to the left. Where this is important considering color involves a similar experiment. The first frame had a circle of a contrasting color to the background and the second had the same circle but on a similarly colored background. The audience interpreted this as the circle moving away from them visually.
