military camouflage
Military camouflage is a relatively recent concept (post WW1 and on) for the Western world. Prior to that military uniforms consisted of bold and somewhat fashionably conscious articles of clothing. Military uniforms were meant to distinguish clearly between friendly and enemy and to clearly promote the state. However, more modern military uniforms are meant to break up the outlines of potential targets, ie soldiers and vehicles etc. The colors and shapes are engineered to blend the camouflaged object into its surroundings. Use of colored blobs fairly effectively dissolves the target.
