QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that was created in Japan in the early 90's. QR stands for "Quick Response" since the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be read quickly. The barcode is also able to be read from many cell phones and cameras in Japan. The QR code is also able to withstand a loss of information. Up to 30% of the data can be lost and the full content can be retrieved.
QR codes were originally only used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, but are now used in a much broader context. Today, QR codes appear in magazines, on billboards, buses, and business cards. By utilizing a cell phone equipped with the proper software, the phone is able to scan the image and redirect the user to the programmed URL. QR codes are also able to contain artwork, images, or logos without jeopardizing the code itself.
